What changed in DMO 8

The DMO caps standing offer prices retailers can charge residential and small business customers in regulated regions. It also serves as the reference price for comparing market deals.

WATTever’s table shows illustrative small business annual benchmarks falling roughly $379 to $705 depending on network zone, with Essential Energy NSW posting the largest flat-rate percentage drop near 11.3%.

Residential changes were mixed, including a small increase in SA Power Networks residential benchmarks. Small business customers saw reductions in all three DMO states covered.

Why laundromats should care

Coin laundry and back-of-house commercial washing run heat pumps, dryers and lighting for long hours. Even mid-single-digit percentage cuts on standing offers matter when annual kWh sits in the tens of thousands.

Standing offer vs market offer

Only customers on standing offers receive regulated price movements automatically on 1 July. Many businesses switched to market contracts during the volatility of 2022 to 2024. Those deals can still be competitive, or they can now lag the new benchmark.

Two months on: what to check now

July and August bills are the first real evidence, not the May press release. Pull those invoices and ask three questions:

• Did the tariff code on the bill match what your retailer confirmed for post-1 July?
• Did kWh rise because of winter dryer load, extended hours or a faulty machine?
• If you’re still on a market plan, how does your effective rate sit against the published DMO reference for your zone?

A flat or higher invoice doesn’t automatically mean DMO failed. Usage growth, supply fees and demand components can swamp a rate cut. Log monthly kWh and total electricity cost against the same month last year so seasonal heating doesn’t fool the comparison.

If the retailer applied the wrong tariff after migration, catch it while the paper trail is fresh. Account managers respond faster to a tariff code and NMI than to a vague complaint about “July savings.”

Reading your bill after the switch

DMO headlines use percentage cuts on reference benchmarks, not your exact account number. Pull the last four quarterly invoices and note whether charges rose from usage growth, supply fee changes, or rate increases. A 9% benchmark drop means little if your dryer cycles jumped 15% after extended trading hours.

DMO applies in New South Wales, South East Queensland and South Australia distribution regions. Victoria and other states use different consumer protection frameworks. Confirm your NMI and distributor on page one of the bill before assuming July 2026 movements affect your site.

Talking to your retailer before renewal

Ask whether your current plan is standing or market, when the contract ends, and whether exit fees apply. Mention DMO 8 explicitly so account managers quote post-July structures rather than recycling 2025 templates. Request a comparison against the published reference price for your distribution zone.

Gas and non-electric loads

Many Sydney laundromats heat water with gas while dryers remain electric. DMO headlines focus on electricity benchmarks. Review gas contracts separately so total utility margin maths stays accurate. A falling electricity reference doesn’t move gas commodity prices automatically.
