Laundromat cost is a wash price plus the dryer time you actually buy. The three Australian operators below publish different capacities and billing blocks. Use their prices as named examples, then use your chosen shop’s tariff to budget your load.

The wash programmes aren’t identical. Nina’s lists Express and Super prices, while the other examples organise their price lists by capacity. A cheaper 9 kg wash isn’t equivalent to an 18 kg wash. Membership discounts and attended services are outside this comparison.

A worked wash-and-dry budget

Using Full Steam Ahead’s published tariff, one 9 kg wash costs $7. Buying four $1 dryer blocks adds $4 for 28 minutes, making $11 before detergent and any payment extras. This is an arithmetic example, not a promise that your clothes will be dry in 28 minutes.

At Nina’s, a non-member 9 kg Express wash is $6. Five $1 blocks in the large dryer buy 25 minutes, producing the same $11 subtotal. The extra-large dryer buys a different number of minutes per dollar. Read the actual machine label rather than carrying the calculation from one dryer to another.

If items need more time, add another block to the total. Check care labels before choosing heat. You cannot estimate a dryer bill from washer capacity alone: fabric, the wash’s spin result and the dryer programme also matter.

Capacity and extras to check before paying

Match the load to a machine whose posted capacity and instructions allow it. Combining clothes into one wash only saves a second fee if those fabrics can share the programme and the load fits properly. A tightly packed drum is not a useful saving.

Ask whether bedding is accepted and which machine the operator recommends for that item. A doona’s size description, such as queen, does not establish its dry weight or whether its care label permits machine washing. Splitting one item between two washers isn’t an option.

Budget detergent separately if you need to buy it. Nina’s advertises packs but its page doesn’t give a pack price. Do not assume every shop supplies detergent or allows pods. A card surcharge, app requirement or temporary authorisation can affect how much money you need available even when the cycle headline is the same.

Keep self-service and attended laundry separate

A self-service machine tariff pays for using the equipment. Wash-and-fold pays an operator to handle your laundry and may have a weight minimum, item exclusions or turnaround choices. Compare the same service before deciding that one shop is cheaper.

For an attended quote, give the approximate weight and describe towels, bedding or garments that need separate handling. Ask about the minimum total and collection time. Start with wash-and-fold pricing; dry-clean-only garments need the separate dry cleaning or washing check.

Plan the visit around a checked tariff

Save the operator’s contact details and a note of its washer size, payment options and dryer block. Check opening and last-start times. Staffed hours can differ from access hours, particularly if you need change or assistance.
